Our Roots Are Showing!
Leaning Across the Curriculum Through
Song Writing and American Roots Music
wild carrot recently participated in the John F. Kennedy Center for the Arts' Seminar, Artists as Educators: Planning Effective Workshops for Teachers. wild carrot will soon be presenting continuing education workshops for teachers on integrating arts into the curriculum.
In the past two academic years wild carrot has performed and conducted workshops in countless schools in Ohio and across the country as Arts Integration Specialists.
Arts & Academic Connections
“Weaving arts activities into academic
studies allows teachers to help students better understand
and retain subject matter. That’s powerful.”
– Carolyn Wheeler, Education Director for
The Muse Machine
wild carrot’s performance and workshops
will:
• Link to academic standards
• Be specific to your Interdisciplinary focus
points and curriculum.
• Address Language Arts, Geography, History, Social
Studies and Science.
About the Performance and Workshops
Wild carrot is able to offer a single performance,
multiple performances in one school or district and/or
songwriting workshops. A morning performance followed
by up to three workshops is optimal for connecting with
the student body and relating to current standards.
Teachers are able to direct the subject matter of the
song written in each class workshop in order to address
specific curriculum topics, or “brainstorming”
with the students can inform the song topic. In
55 minutes wild carrot will help each class write a
song and will leave the class with a cassette recording
of their song.
These are some of the questions your group of students
will discuss and actively learn during wild carrot’s
performance and workshops:
• What is folk and roots music?
• What is the role and origin of folk music in
America?
• Who are some important folk singers and their
songs?
• How is a song written and who can write them?
• What is a: guitar, mandolin, banjo,
dulcimer, concertina and penny whistle and how do they
sound and work?
From jazz and folk songs to show tunes and original
material, we span the last century with an interactive
style that keeps all ages interested.
